That is, in part, why the JREAM Team, as we
have dubbed ourselves, has endeavoured to,
through the sale of copies of our publication,
make a contribution to the education and
training of asp iring media professionals, who
will take that first step toward becoming true
communication specialists here at CARIMAC.
All proceeds will be invested in the CARIMAC
Students’ Assistance Fund.
The cover of this edition provides extended
commentary on the increasing need for
professional journalists who will go beyond the
surface of damning issues affecting the public.
The image of the magnifying glass hovering above
an illuminated cityscape is a poetic display of
how involved yet dispassionate we have to be,
as we investigate obscured issues of national,
and in some cases, international proportions.
The stories inside explore the themes of abuse,
education, environment, economics with an
emphasis on youth, minorities and public
health. They take you, our readers, on a journey
to explore the ubiquitous nature of bullying,
the politics of identity, the vulnerabilities of the
mind, the ambiguities of language, the pleas
of the Earth and the many layers of humanity.
It goes without saying that we dared not forget
that no greater good in the history of human
existence has been realised without considerable
difficulty, as we trekked towards to the successful
production of CARIMAC Times 2016. A great
deal depended on our ability, as journalists, to
communicate effectively and exercise patience
during investigations. We thank Dr. Barnes
for her guidance and encouragement as she
allowed us freedom to err and triumph in the
face of hardship. This process truly put to the
test how well we could professionally apply
learned theory to a real-world assignment of
this magnitude. Having done work typical of
a group of at least 15 members, we can better
appreciate the intricacies of the journalistic
process. The JREAM Team thanks all those
who have invested in this, a journalist’s dream.
