Conclusion The evidence presented suggests that Governments’ divestment programs have had a positive impact on stock market development in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, in particular. However, it is also patently clear that Caribbean capital market development cannot be dependent solely on Governments’ divestment. The private sector and the investing public are the two primary pillars on which the markets must be built. More importantly, we must urgently solve the crisis indentified by Prime Minister Anthony. C. Wainwright Iton Mr. C. Wainwright Iton, popularly known as Wain Iton, was appointed general manager and Chief Executive Officer of the Trinidad & Tobago Stock Exchange (TTSE) in December 2007 he has 25 plus years experience in finance and management. Prior to this, Mr. Iton ran a private consultancy offering guidance on corporate finance matters with particular emphasis on the structuring of initial public offerings (IPOs) between April 2004 and October 2007. Mr. Iton headed the Jamaican Stock Exchange (JSE) from 1987 to 2004 and is credited with leading the transformation and modernisation of the exchange from a manual operation to a fully computerised marketplace. He was also instrumental in helping shape legislation relating to securities and equity laws. Mr. Iton was chairman of a steering committee on the Caribbean Capital Markets Harmonisation Project and was responsible for co-ordinating the project which involved the exchanges in Jamaica, Barbados, T&T, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas. One of the outcomes of the project was the computerisation of all the exchanges with the exception of the Dominican Republic. He also served on the board of directors of the Bank of Jamaica from 2000-2001. Iton began his career at one of the Caribbean’s largest corporations, Grace Kennedy. From 1982 to 1987, he was a project manager and corporate planning analyst identifying new business opportunities and providing analysis on acquisitions. From 1979 to 1982, he was a lecturer in the Department of Management Studies at the University of the West Indies (UWI), where he developed the curriculum in management accounting, financial management and general management.
