Adult maths

There are many reasons that around 100 thousand adults turn up each year at their local further education ( FE ) college or independent training provider ( ITP ) to study maths again . I was 30 when I went to my local FE college to take a few GCSEs including Maths , once I enrolled on a course , I developed a passion for learning . Little did I know , after a career as a landscape gardener , that I would later become a teacher of maths .
Who is maths for ?
Like me some adults progress onto further or higher education , many do apprenticeships or add it to their CV as a passport to employment . Some simply have unfinished business and use their maturity to master maths in a way that they didn ’ t manage the first time around and get huge satisfaction from achieving .
Others find that they are increasingly bewildered by their children ’ s school maths and want to give themselves the chance to be one step ahead , and since parents became ‘ stand in ’ teachers during the pandemic this proved to be a sharp move .
