c. Work Smart In addition to working hard, you would need to work smart. There are some common workplace challenges that may need some diplomacy and management skills from your part to overcome. Workplace Stress Sexual Harassment • What is Sexual Harassment? Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favours, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that tends to create a hostile or offensive work environment. Sexual harassment is a form of Sex Discrimination that occurs in the workplace. • Dealing with Sexual Harassment at the Workplace o Say no to the Harasser. o Making a complaint to a neutral party, for instance the Human Resource Department. If the company does not take action and does nothing to address the harassment issue, you have the option to seek alternative employment o If the Harasser is your direct supervisor, and you feel that it is inappropriate to do so, you have a choice to seek an alternative employment. No job is not worth compromising your self-respect and dignity for. o Start recording the Harassment incidents. Be specific on time, date, location, acts and parties involved. o Maintain copies of your work records, to support the consistency of your performance, despite the harassment. o Talk to others at work, who may have also fallen victim to the Harasser. o Sexual Harassment is an offence in Singapore under the Protection from Harassment Act 2014. Under the Act, the Victim may seek a protection order. 8
