ADULT CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE
UAB Medicine has a long history of caring for patients with adult congenital heart disease ( ACHD ). The UAB ACHD program is the only one of its kind in Alabama , collaborating with the UAB Division of Pediatric Cardiology to help ensure a smooth transition for patients aging out of pediatric care . It is estimated that 60 % of patients with congenital heart disease are adults , which highlights the importance of maintaining care with a dedicated ACHD physician .
UAB ’ s ACHD program draws upon resources and faculty from the divisions of Cardiothoracic Adult and Pediatric Surgery , Cardiovascular Disease , Pediatric Cardiology , Maternal-Fetal Medicine , and the Department of Radiology , as well as services provided by the electrophysiology and cardiac catheterization laboratories . Patients have the option to be seen at multiple locations across Alabama , including The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital on our main campus in Birmingham and satellite clinics in Montgomery , Huntsville , and Mobile .
