HISTORY NOTES
The victims of the Zeppelin raid of 31st January and 1st February 1916, covered in this issue, were remembered in a
number of local events.
TIPTON
On 8th February a plaque was unveiled by West Bromwich MP Adrian Bailey at Tipton Cemetery commemorating the
14 local people who died in the (above). Orchestrated by Friends of Tipton
Cemetery, led by Pauline Hodgetts, more than 100 people, along with Mayor
councillor Barbara Price, turned up for the unveiling ceremony.
LOUGHBOROUGH
The 100th anniversary of a Zeppelin raid on Loughborough, which saw 10
people killed, will be marked by a series of public events over the weekend
of 13th & 14th February. The highlight was the unveiling of a bronze plaque
memorial to those killed - the first bearing the names of those whose lives
were lost. Other events included an exhibition in Charnwood Museum, and
a tour of the Zeppelin attack sites with local historian Bob Stephens from
14:30-16:00. At 18:00 the memorial was unveiled in The Rushes before a
"warm-up" in The Swan in the Rushes from 18:30 - 19:50, concluding with
a commemoration and vigil at the memorial in The Rushes at 20:00 the
time the first bomb fell.
