O
ne of the Sacramento region’s most
significant and exciting projects breaks
ground in May with an anticipated
opening in 2020. The Powerhouse
Science Center, repurposing a long-idle
historic landmark building, is rising along
the Sacramento River with a mission of
engaging and inspiring people of all ages
to explore the wonders, possibilities, and

technology, engineering, math, and space,
helping to prepare the next generation
workforce.
With vital funding from SMUD, title
sponsors, and unanimous support from
Mayor Steinberg and Sacramento city
council members, construction now begins
on the 50,000-square-foot campus.
Features include 20,000 square feet

“The commitment of SMUD and
our own mission will usher in the future
through STEM, and help create the
next generation of problem solvers,”
says Michael Galane, Board President
for Powerhouse. “We have 80 percent
of funding in place for this $50 million
project, and now we look to the
community, individual philanthropists, and
our corporate citizens, to help us cross the
finish line of our fundraising campaign.”
Funding from this next phase of the
campaign will support enhancements
to exhibits and galleries, installation of a
technology-rich design lab, excellence in
educational and exhibit programs, and

establishing an endowment fund for long-
term sustainability.
“Powerhouse is truly a community
resource to fulfill our mission and help
shape the future for all of us,” says Galane.
“The spirit of partnership has brought us to
this monumental groundbreaking, and we
invite community members to get involved
now, see us through to completion, and
leave a lasting legacy in the region.”
