uzz Oates enjoys partnering
with Cristo Rey’s work-study
program. Students have
provided support and improved
some overall efficiency in our
office, and our employees can
give back to the community
by mentoring, teaching, and
encouraging the students. The
students bring a willingness and
great attitude, as well as fun
energy to the office. Most aren’t
sure what they want to do after
high school; the work-study
program gives them first-hand
work experience to explore what
they’re good at and interested
in. Two of our students are
now pursuing Construction
Management degrees at Chico
State. The students learn job skills,
and also important relational, life,

on’t bemoan the work habits
of “kids these days” until
you’ve met the young men
and women of Cristo Rey High
School Sacramento. They are not
entitled, as they all come from
economically disadvantaged
families. That same background
means they are not spoiled,
and exhibit gratitude for every
opportunity. Plus, they are not on
a pre-ordained track fashioned by
their parents, but are true 'pioneers,'
in many cases hoping to be the first
in their families to earn a college
degree. Hiring a student is not only
good business, but is additive to
your corporate culture. Work will
get done, and attitudes will be
changed if you employ the young
men and women of CRHSS."

here is no better way to raise
the sights, and life trajectory,
of high school students, than
to provide a superior education
that is integrated with meaningful
access and work at a non-profit
organization. Non-profits are
the heart of most communities,
lending a hand to those who slip
between the cracks of public safety
nets. What students learn while
working for these organizations
is synergistic: they grow up and
become not just successful
individuals, but successful
responsible members of their
community, and society at large.
