hriners Hospitals for Children
celebrates 20 years in Sacramento
this year, having moved from San
Francisco to its current site adjacent to
the UC Davis Medical Center in 1997. This
year also marks 94 years that Shriners
has been providing specialized pediatric
orthopaedics care in Northern California.
“Our anniversary is significant because
we’re delivering on what was initially a
brand-new vision in 1997. We are the
only location in the entire Shriners system
throughout the US, Canada, and Mexico
that offers multi-disciplinary care,” says
Alan Anderson, Director of Development.
“Prior to moving to Sacramento, Shriners
offered only pediatric orthopaedics. Today,
children receive care for acute burns and
spinal cord injuries, as well as pediatric
orthopaedics. We’ve also added new
specialties within the last five years.”

Beginning in 2013, Shriners Hospital
expanded its comprehensive cerebral palsy
program and launched two new services
- pediatric surgery and pediatric joint
preservation.
“We’ve admitted more than 75,000
children for care since 1997,” notes
Anderson. “And we know there are
hundreds of thousands more. Just last
year, we had more than 6,800 first-time
referrals and managed nearly 28,000
outpatient visits.”
The majority of children live within
100 miles of Sacramento. Nevertheless,
many patients travel hundreds of miles
for orthopaedic care, and even further
for the other specialties. Last year, in
addition to Canada and Mexico, patients
came from 31 US states or territories.
“Referrals come from every corner of the
healthcare community, but parents can

simply call us, too. It really is that easy,”
notes Anderson.
“Roughly 75 percent of our budget
comes from philanthropic sources, so
charitable contributions are critical to our
work. Those dollars are directly converted
into healthcare for kids in the community.
Each contribution is a gift straight to your
own community of the best care possible
for all kids,” concludes Anderson.
