From the time Comstock’s magazine was born over 28 years ago, nonprofit executives would ask for coverage. Their causes were compelling, but I had a business magazine to publish, and our stories had to pertain to key issues relative to business. Each cause, however, tugged at my heartstrings. There had to be a way for nonprofit organizations to tell their stories to CEOs, small business owners and elected officials. Ul- timately we added a section in the magazine called “Capital Region Cares” that ended up growing into an annual publication, the 22nd edition of which you hold in your hands. This publication gives nonprofits the attention they deserve, while celebrating businesses that demonstrate good corporate citizenship through their support. There is much to celebrate in the local nonprofit community. This year, a record $7.2 mil- lion was raised on the “Big Day of Giving,” a campaign of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation to create awareness of area nonprofits. To date, $23 million has been raised since BDoG’s launch in 2013. Health Net Federal Services donated $150,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sac- ramento to sponsor the first-ever “Veteran Home Build Project.” This is the largest financial home sponsorship donation from a single donor in Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacra- mento’s 31-year history. The Sacramento Native American Health Center was awarded a $1.25 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to develop a community-based system for addressing mental health needs among American Indian/Alaskan Native youth. In response to the devastating wildfires throughout California, Wells Fargo has donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross’ California wildfire relief ef- forts. What causes can you contribute to? Consider helping to fund housing for the homeless, or mothers and children in crisis. Commit to outreach to the disabled or veterans when an- nouncing your latest job vacancy. Help to fund the dreams of seriously ill children. Support a safe space that offers myriad after-school activities for at-risk youth. Nonprofit employees and volunteers need support from donors and partners to make a positive difference in the quality of life for those in need. I hope you will take some time to read the stories included in this annual publication of the remarkable nonprofit organizations and foundations in our region. I promise you it will be time well spent. Please remember, our contributions can ease the daily burdens of the incredible institutions, helping to “keep the doors open.” Published by Comstock Publishing Inc. 2335 American River Drive, Ste 301 Sacramento, CA 95825 (916) 364-1000 Fax (916) 364-0350 comstocksmag.com Winnie Comstock-Carlson Publisher comstocksmag.com | 2017 CAPITAL REGION CARES 5
