As things have shifted from housing
children in orphanages to working
to prevent the need for out-of-home
placement, we’ve been one step ahead
of those trends. Over the decades, our
leadership has been highly proactive in
the care of vulnerable children.”
The organization has improved the
entire Sacramento community. “Our
focus is children, but our programs
and services are intended to benefit
the entire family. We provide parenting
classes in our Family Resource Centers,
and address positive parenting skills
right in the homes of parents at
risk, such as those struggling with
unemployment, as single parents, or
with special needs children. We also
provide case management support
to parents of children we’re serving,
those battling homelessness, addiction,
or mental illness.” Partnerships with
individuals and businesses have been

essential to Sacramento Children’s
Home’s longevity. “We’re proud of
what we do and the partnerships
we’ve built,” concludes Koolakian. “We
look forward to being around another
150 years and think the business
community can play a central role in
that.”

his year, Sacramento
Children’s Home celebrates its
150th anniversary. Founded as
an orphanage in 1867, this remarkable
organization has grown into one of the
Sacramento region’s largest and most
distinguished child and family service
agencies.
Today, they offer early intervention
and prevention services to avert the
need for out-of-home placement for
vulnerable children with the ultimate
goal of keeping families together. For
some of the most traumatized youth
in need, though, services still include
a short-term Residential Treatment
Program that provides intensive mental
health care in a group home setting and
prepares youth to return to a family
home.
“Other non-profits providing
similar services have come and gone,”
notes Todd Koolakian, Director of
Philanthropy, “but we’ve been around
for 150 years because we’ve evolved and
