The system’ s“ school choice” program allows flexibility and freedom in deciding which school a child can attend. Rather than having school assignment determined solely by home address, students and parents can decide which schools in their area( or zone) are their top choices. Most students can attend their first choice, and once students are assigned, they can stay in that school until they graduate or request to change schools. The Lee County School District also offers a completely online, virtual classroom for elementary through high school for students and families seeking an alternative to a bricks-and-mortar institution. The Lee Virtual School is an accredited, diploma-granting institution equivalent to a traditional public school, and it follows the same academic calendar.
Many of Cape Coral public schools earned top“ A” grades for 2014 in Florida’ s school assessment program that helps measure student achievement, based largely on student test scores. Each school’ s score is available to the public and can be found at LeeSchools. net.
For parents of young toddlers, voluntary pre-kindergarten( VPK) programs are available through the school system for 4 year olds whose families meet free lunch guidelines, while many privately run facilities also offer VPK programs free of charge. Parents of children who are 5 can apply for kindergarten classes.
