MAURITIUS ISLAND DISCOVERY Geography o o Mauritius is 62 km long (from North to South) and 46 km wide (from East to West), and stretches over a total area of 1,865 square kilometres o o The island itself is formed around a central plateau which is located approximately 600 metres above sea level. It has about 350 km of coastline, almost entirely protected by coral reefs, with the exception of certain portions in the South (Souillac cliffs) o o Mauritius is of volcanic formation and boasts sev- eral mountains of average size. The highest moun- tain, located in the South-West of the island, is Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire (828 metres). The second highest mountain is Pieter Both (823 metres), and Le Pouce, is a close third at 812 metres o o The island has several natural lakes (old volcanic craters) and six man-made reservoirs (Nicolière, Midlands, Mare-aux-Vacoas, La Ferme, Piton du Milieu, Mare Longue) o o The capital city, also the largest city in Mauritius, is Port Louis, located in the o o North-West o o The seaport of Mauritius is Port Louis o o Mauritius is located in the south-western part of the Indian Ocean, North of the Tropic of Capricorn, 900 km East of Madagascar, less than 200 km North- East of Reunion Island, about 3,900 km South-West of India and about 9,500 km from France o o The Mauritian territory also includes Rodrigues Island, which is located 600 kilometres to the East of Mauritius o o In addition to Mauritius and Rodrigues, the Mau- ritian territory has two small dependencies. The Agalega archipelago, composed of two small is- lands, is located 1,100 km North of Mauritius.
