The organization partners with 46 hospitals in Northern California and Northern Nevada and two transplant centers , UC Davis and Sutter Sacramento . Their team coordinates the allocation and recovery of organs or tissue , as well as the transportation to the transplant centers .
Even during the pandemic , transplants were deemed an essential medical service , so SDS team members continued their work in hospitals . However , the organization ’ s administrative offices were closed to almost all use . “ We don ’ t fundraise in the way traditional nonprofits do , but we did have to adapt to working remotely and conducting meetings online ,” says SDS Executive Director Sean Van Slyck . “ Essentially , since March 2020 , we set employees up with laptops and dual screens and invested in virtual connectivity . Even now , our meetings are on Zoom at least through this winter .” The pandemic has had many unpredictable turns and created tremendous uncertainty , but with COVID numbers currently down , the nonprofits that are not crisis-oriented can hope to see a gradual return of clients , patrons and donors . Crisis-oriented nonprofits may also be able to return to a more predictable way of doing business , better informed for having had a trial run of their services under great pressure . New business models that worked well will continue , new partnerships that worked well will be nourished and with federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars on the horizon , nonprofits now look with hope to 2022 .
