School children
combine science
& Canoeing on
the Leeds &
Liverpool Canal

The Canal & River Trust
waterway charity hosted
a week-long programme
of free canoeing and
science activities for local
schoolchildren in Burnley.185
schoolchildren from Year 5
& 6 combined a morning or
afternoon of canoeing along
the Leeds & Liverpool Canal
in Burnley with an indoor
hands-on science workshop,
designed to help explain
factors that affect whether
an object sinks or floats.
This new programme, held
between 25 and 29 September,
was part of a whole host of
initiatives the Canal & River
Trust offers to schools free
of charge and was run in
conjunction with its Desmond
Family Canoe Trail, the UK’s
first coast-to-coast canoe route,
which runs through Burnley.
Congratulations to Scott Simon,
Paracanoe Head Coach, after
winning a bronze medal at
the 2017 Invictus Games.
Competing in powerlifting,
Scott claimed third place for the
UK in the Men’s Heavyweight
final with a result of 175.00.

Alliance Board Member,
Anne Usher MBE at the Sport
and Recreation Alliance in
London on 29th Sept 2017.
The two organisations met to
discuss how they can work
closer together to ensure that a
much greater voice is delivered
from the sport and recreation
sector in relation to getting
much needed access onto our
waterways so as people and
communities can be more
active and enjoy England
and Wales beautiful natural
environments in a responsible
and sustainable manner.

On Saturday 21st October, 53
paddlers took to the waters
around Dudley to explore the
elusive Dudley and Netherton
tunnel system which is only
open to canoes and kayaks
on a few days a year.
