• Franchising will be a natural as legalization spreads. Which companies will be a future cannabis McDonald’s and Burger King?

• Foreign opportunities? Europe is on the cusp of a breakout. Latin America and Asia are in the early stages of legalization.

8. The media is starved for fresh content.

Local editors and TV producers are especially needy, and cannabis is a hot topic. You can also reach the media directly — pick up the phone or send an email — without going through expensive PR people.

You just need a good story, with an attention-grabber. Social media can also publicize a company for a tiny fraction of what it cost a few years ago, and do it far faster, cheaper.

9. Non-traditional funding is pouring into cannabis.

The New York Times recently had a big story: “Marijuana startups, shut out from banks, turn to private backing.” There are thousands of independent investors who formerly wanted no part of startups — because of their high risk — but are now very interested in cannabis-related ventures.
