Cannabis has been used medicinally
and ceremonially by humans for
at least 3000 years.
[Economic Botany October 2016, Volume 70, Issue 3, pp 213-221 ].
The cannabinoids and other compounds in cannabis stimulated the endogenous human cannabinoid receptor system, composed of at least two functional receptors in humans, CB1 and CB2. This cannabinoid system in internally mediated by anandamide and other endogenous small molecule ligands. However, the compounds found in cannabis, particularly Δ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol, are able to more potently stimulate CB1 and CB2 than endogenous ligands, creating its medical use.
The family of compounds known to interact with the cannabinoid receptors is currently growing. Besides endocannabinoids and cannabis compounds, a number of pharmaceutical compounds are in development.
