types of products are effective for pets? Although this may seem like a simple question, it couldn’t be more confusing. Understanding what cannabinoids ARE can help to select an effective product. At its most basic explanation, CBD is one of over 100 cannabionids present in the cannabis family of plants. CBD and THC are the most recognizable, but caanabigerol (CBG), cannabichromene (CBC), and cannabinol (CBN) are other cannabinoids present in trace amounts in hemp plants. Each cannabinoid has different effects on mammal’s endocannabinoid receptors. With this understanding, look for a product that contains multiple cannabinoids (but less than 0.3% THC to keep within federal legal guidelines). Additional therapeutic parts of the plant include terpenoids, flavonoids, waxes, and lipids. Keeping as many parts of the plant in the final extract lends to a better therapeutic profile than isolate (single molecule) tinctures, otherwise known as the entourage effect.

Once you have selected a quality product, now you are responsible for using an appropriate dose of CBD for your pet. The published articles available in dogs have shown a very wide safety margin, but interactions with other medications are important to consider. Make sure to involve your veterinarian in this decision. There are resources available to help guide pet parents to choosing a proper product and dosing regimen, such as www.veterinarycannabis.org. Reported doses of 1-2 milligrams per kilogram of CBD twice daily have been used with success in the university studies. Indications for CBD therapy can include: situational anxiety, mobility issues/joint pain, inflammatory bowel disease, seizures, and decreased appetites (anorexia). It is important to note that while CBD therapy can have beneficial results, there are no FDA approved products for pets; therefore, CBD is not proven to treat or prevent disease in pets. The take home message is if you choose to use CBD in your pet, make sure to find a quality product and consult your veterinarian regarding your pet’s condition.
