Cannabis fell into disinterest of medical professionals from the newly available technology in the 1800s and early 1900s. Specifically in Western medical practices. Additionally, cannabis couldn’t provide a reliable standardized preparation due to the current cultivation tactics and extraction methods. To further diminish cannabis, many legal restrictions were instilled limiting medical application and research. Cannabis was criminalized in the United States in 1937, against the advice of the American Medical Association submitted on record to Congress (Aggarwal).
Despite extensive historical usage, cannabis is still underultilized for chronic pain and disease. The scientific interest for cannabis has significantly grown. It’s lead further investigation in to its therapeutic effects. Research is now being conducted for more authentic and detailed scientific methods surrounding cannabis knowledge. Recent studies reveal that cannabiniods have a rich pharamacology. They hold potential to interact with a number of receptor systems as well as with other cannabioids to produce probable synergies (Warf). The federal government still classifies “Marijuana” as a “Schedule I controlled substance, along with heroin and LSD, indicating it has high potential for abuse and addiction, no acceptable medical uses and not safe level of use”(Aggarwal).
