FROM THE EDITORS

Greetings CANNAHEALTH Readers,

This month issues focuses on Cardiovascular Health! Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Heart disease kills more than 600,000 people every year in the United States alone; constituting about 25 percent of all deaths. Middle aged and older adults are experiencing higher levels of heart disease than ever before. Poor diet, lack of exercise, and obesity, just to name a few are pushing heart problems such as heart attacks, cardiovascular disorders, and coronary artery disease to an all-time high.

Cannabis research has shown that it can lower blood pressure which is good for people with hypertension. Cannabis is considered a potent vasodilator which is how blood pressure is lowered. Cannabis research has also shown that it increases heart rate. Researches are concerned that increase heart rate after consuming cannabis can make some people feel anxious and puts you at greater risk for having a heart attack.

Additional research shows that cannabis may be a trigger for heart conditions in young people. These researchers have found that young people develop stress cardiomyopathy. Stress cardiomyopathy is a temporary weakening of the heart muscles that is often caused by things like intense stress and grief. However, some researchers argue that cannabis is an independent risk factor for certain types of heart conditions.

It goes without saying that anytime you are concerned about your heart, seek medical advice from a physician. The articles in this issue focuses on the benefits of cannabis on cardiovascular health. We hope you enjoy reading this issue. Thank you for your continued support!
