Combating the Confusion:

Laws Before Legalization

s a Marijuana Consultant, I constantly come across many patients and their caregivers who do not see eye-to-eye when it comes to medicinal cannabis / marijuana care and use. Even though medicinal marijuana is legal in several states, the idea of requesting a marijuana prescription makes many more nervous than ever. The fact that marijuana is still considered a Schedule 1 drug does not make it any easier and thus, the stigma remains (DEA, 2018). The disagreements include the use of cannabidiol (CBD) oil products and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and non-THC (THC University, 2018). Is there a solution to this dilemma?

The push is towards cannabis education (MM411, 2018). However, questions persist. Should we educate the masses regarding cannabis and cannabis product use? Who should be required to take the courses and what organization should instruct the courses? How should we acquire the needed cannabis education and at what cost? Who receives the profits for the education- the state, educational for-profit colleges? And into whose coffers will the proceeds belong? How will the cannabis courses be delivered? Should the Department of Motor Vehicles along with education for alcohol, cell-phone texting while operating a motor vehicle, include cannabis use as well?

One hundred unanswered questions. In completing this article, I found very little information regarding care-givers and cannabis law. There are online forms available to apply to become a cannabis caregiver and the like, but very little relevant to caregiver and cannabis clinical care. Unfortunately, the “stoner” mentality continues for those that need the cannabis products, services and education.
