Training

California cannabis companies have an extra long list of employee training requirements. The Bureau of Cannabis Control and state regulations put a heavy burden on companies by making license holders liable for the actions of employees. This is especially true when it comes to managers and supervisors. What an employee does or says may not only impact a company's license, but it can put the business owner in a bad position when it comes to labor law violations and employee harassment lawsuits. However, many companies don't have access to high quality training that is both California and cannabis specific.

Benefits Insurance

Cannabis companies find getting basic required insurance like workers compensation more difficult or expensive because fewer policies exist and many insurance agents don't understand the complexities of the industry. Even getting basic employee benefits like 401(k) and health insurance is a challenge because (like banks) many major service providers will not knowingly provide retirement benefit administration for cannabis companies. In addition, many legitimate cannabis businesses cannot deduct the cost of

providing these benefits or contributing to employee plans because of current IRS regulations.

Health & Safety

All licensed cannabis businesses have additional regulations when it comes to employee health and safety. Once the first employee is hired, the company must plan to have at least one supervisor and one employee complete a 30-hour safety training course. After that, each license type has more specific training and documentation requirements that most ordinary businesses don't have to complete right away. While the regulations are in place, very few companies offer safety support services for cannabis, either because they don't have staff with specialized industry knowledge or they won't work in the cannabis industry
