Immune therapies aim to unlock the power of the human
immune system, unleashing it to seek and destroy cancer cells
(Figure 1). These types of therapies are:
• Immune vaccines, which retrain lymphocytes, called
T-cells, to attack cancer.
• Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR T-cell)— T-Cells
removed from a patient or donor and engineered in the
laboratory to produce CARs on the cell surface which
provide the immune system with a new way to recognize
and kill cancer.
• Immune checkpoint inhibitors, which uncloak cancer cells,
enabling the immune system to resume its job of clear
