As you can see , overthinking can come in various forms but the one thing they all have in common is that all forms of overthinking are distractions , which prevents you from performing optimally .
So you may ask , how can you move from consciously thinking to performance mode while competing ?
Since you can ’ t turn your thoughts off , the key is to REDIRECT your focus .
Here are some mental strategies on how to do just that :
1 ) Use self-talk to help prompt you to switch from conscious over thinking mode to performance mode by saying to yourself : " play on auto pilot ."
2 ) When you notice yourself focusing on mechanics , redirect your attention by reciting predetermined , simple cue words or phrases that trigger the right mindset and focus .
3 ) When you make a mistake , avoid analyzing your game during the competition and instead save it for after the show .
4 ) Establish a consistent pre-show routine that includes physical AND mental preparation .
5 ) Clearly define your goals for each show , which helps to provide direction and purpose .
6 ) Rather than dwelling on the potential outcome or the ranking , focus on the specific tasks and processes within the show schedule . Break down the show into smaller , manageable components and concentrate on executing each one effectively .
7 ) Practice mindfulness and deep breathing exercises to stay present in the moment . Techniques i . e . controlled breathing can help calm your mind and reduce anxiety .
8 ) Train your mind to handle pressure and adversity .
9 ) Visualization , positive self-talk , and mental imagery can help build mental toughness and resilience .
10 ) Build trusting skills in your training by reminding yourself that you have put in the necessary training and practice so let your muscle memory take over during your competition .
11 ) Concentrate on the current moment , rather than dwelling on past mistakes or worrying about future outcomes .
12 ) View mistakes as opportunities to learn and improve rather than as failures .
