Juan : That sounds like an amazing way to bond with your father . How does your dad feel about you getting into bodybuilding ? Michael : He is very proud of me and always checks in with me . We share the same passion for bodybuilding and fitness . I am lucky that he can sign well enough to encourage and support me to do my best in life .
Juan : What have been some of your favorite accomplishments in fitness and in bodybuilding ? Michael : Working out with my dad whenever we can is highlight for me . Also meeting many people in different gyms and winning three medals at my first CPA show . I am proud to be a part of DeafFit ( a group of deaf people all over the world who share tips in American Sign Language )
Juan : How has being deaf influenced your bodybuilding experience , if at all ? Michael : I have more focus and determination because of my deafness . I break down any barriers that come my way and move forward with my goals . I do not allow anything to stop me . It does not matter if you can hear or you are deaf , as long as you work hard , use your passion , and stay focused , you can achieve anything you set your mind to . I do not use the excuse of being deaf for not competing in shows . I work hard on my body just like other bodybuilders .
Juan : That is the mindset of a champion ! What have promoters done in the CPA , in order to make the shows more accessible to those who are deaf ? Michael : After registering online for my first CPA show in Ottawa , I reached out to the organizers by email and introduced myself . I did not want to surprise anyone upon my arrival , so I shared a bit about myself being deaf and me being a first-time competitor . The response they gave me was very positive so I felt good moving forward with the show . I mentioned that I needed an American Sign Language interpreter . However , I got the impression that they did not have the funds to cover the
