Osé is an 18-year-old R & B / soul artist , singer , and songwriter from Toronto who ’ s making waves in the city ’ s music community with her soulful voice and deep lyricism . Her latest single , “ Hurt Bae ,” which was independently released , has already racked up more than 32,000 listens on Spotify and an incredible 634,000 views on YouTube .
Osé recalls that her dad would tell her stories about her artistic and talented grandmother who , sadly due to her environment and circumstances , did not have the opportunity to share her gift with others . Inspired by these stories , Osé says she strives to do what her grandmother never could . This fuels Osé ’ s passion to obtain success in music and to use her platform to advocate for women of colour and push to create a voice for them as well by promoting diversity in the industry .
Osé lists a number of modern R & B artists among her inspirations – including H . E . R ., Brandy , SZA , Mary J . Blige , Jhene Aiko , and Beyoncé – and the influence of these vocal powerhouses can be heard in songs like “ Hurt Bae ” and “ Games .” It ’ ll be exciting to see if and how Osé pushes the boundaries of her sound forward , much like her heroes did .

Philippines-born , Vancouver-based rock artist Dey Rose has built a loyal following for her distinctive blend of glam rock , soul , jazz , the folk . Her latest single , “ Hurricane ,” borrows more from the foot-stomping folk-rock realm of artists like The Decemberists , or more specifically , Elle King ’ s 2015 hit “ Ex ’ s & Oh ’ s .” “ Hurricane ”— interestingly a decade-old tune Rose first wrote as a teenager — is the second single off her upcoming LP , Evelyn .
Rose notes that in 2021 , releasing music that unapologetically “ guitar rock ” is “ more an act of defiance than an expression of stylistic allegiance ,” she wants to draw the listener ’ s attention to the steel-string flamenco , the Pete Townshend-esqe single-chord breaks , the gang claps , the ringing fuzz tones . Dey Rose says she is proud to be a “ child of fiery rock ,” but not an artist content on remaking past hits or chasing glories of yesteryear .
BLACK SUIT DEVIL
There is no mistaking Andy Du Rego , a . k . a . Black Suit Devil , for anybody else the moment you hear him on tunes like “ Main St .” and “ A Matter of Time .” Both musically and vocally , his latest album , A Matter of Time , sounds like a collision of Ray LaMontagne and Tom Waits . He brings the former ’ s serene , whispery vocal style and effortless melodies and the latter ’ s trademark raspiness and rollicking , haphazard instrumentation .
With his melodic and thought-provoking songwriting inspired by the folk , rock , blues , and soul greats , Black Suit Devil has toured all across Canada and played such festivals as Harvest Jazz & Blues , Living Roots Music Festival , TD Newmarket Music Festival , and Winterfolk XVII . A Matter of Time , Du Rego ’ s second LP as Black Suit Devil , was released November 2019 and earned positive reviews on Spill Magazine , Canadian Beats , and Great Dark Wonder and has reached the number one spot on CJSF ’ s top 30 albums of the week , as well as charting multiple weeks in the Top 10 folk / roots / blues categories on other independent radio stations on the ! earshot charts . The heart and soul of the album lies within its subject matter , which touches upon environmental issues , politics , human rights , mental illness , to love and loss and so many things in between . With such an immediately-recognizable voice and strong songwriting , it ’ s easy to see Black Suit Devil turning more and more people into converts .
