ADAM RUZZO
WHAT : Folk
WHERE : Annapolis County , NS
VISIT : www . adamruzzo . com
Adam Ruzzo travels Canada from coast to coast , gathering stories and aiming to capture the essence of the Canadian experience in his folk music . His inspiration largely comes from the Canadian wilderness , and his music is meant to provide a soundscape to the awe-inspiring beauty of these silent places .
Originally hailing from western Nova Scotia , Ruzzo received a Master ’ s degree in classical guitar performance from the University of Toronto , and has won first prize in the FCMF National Classical Guitar Competition . His new 16-song album , The Land , the Sea , the People , is an ode to the quiet corners of Canada , inspired by his travels to the country ’ s vast , rural areas . Songs like “ Yukon Gold ,” “ St . Mary ’ s Bay ,” and “ Under the Northern Sky ” take the listener along with Ruzzo to experience the peacefulness of Canada ’ s lesser-populated spots . The album has been well-received within Canada , reaching number one for two weeks in a row in Halifax .
Emily Whitelaw is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter and a queer trans woman , born in Calgary but now living on Salt Spring Island . Under the name Effemeral Inattentive , she uses her music to give voice to experiences and emotions that often go unshared and unheard by people like her . Dealing with themes of love , pain and self-discovery , her hope is that listeners can find something to relate to in her music .
Whitelaw has a background in musical theatre and contemporary art music , as well as classical and early music singing . As a folk artist , her lyrics are deeply personal , but are written with the intention of resonating with others as well . She draws influence from the lyricism and music of songwriters like Tracy Chapman and Joni Mitchell , whom she admires for their unflinchingly honest and incisive wording . A full range of emotions can be heard on Whitelaw ’ s newest six-song effort , Flower in the Dark , with upbeat , hopeful songs contrasting stripped-down , melancholic tunes , in a true folk fashion .

A duo based partly in Toronto , with feet also in Pittsburgh and Los Angeles , The Savage Patch Kidds create melodic , alternative pop music — and while danceable and catchy , there ’ s much more to the group ’ s music than what most would associate with the term “ pop .” Comprised of artists Ramona Vogue and kidd Chaos , The Savage Patch Kidds use their differing backgrounds in rock , hip-hop , and alternative pop bring a new sound and energy to their craft , taking inspiration from the differences in the cities where they spend their time as well .
Since releasing their debut EP 1991 in 2020 , The Savage Patch Kidds have won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for their song “ Tangible Love ,” as well as the Lift-Off Global Network ’ s First-Time Filmmaker ’ s Contest for their self-directed music video for the song “ Good Old Days .” Their follow-up LP , Oody Mart , is set to release this year . The lyrics aim to tackle the inner workings of the mind as it processes the world these artists have endured .
