Byron Stroud A bona fide staple of Can- ada’s heavy music scene, Byron Stroud rose to prom- inence as a member of ex- treme metal outfit Strapping Young Lad and industrial metal icons Fear Factory. He has also done stints with 3 Inches of Blood, Unit 187, and Imonolith and currently counts groove metal group City of Fire and thrash met- allers Zimmers Hole among his ongoing projects. • • • • • • • • • Fender Custom Shop 5-String Jazz Bass Darkglass Electronics Microtubes 900 Head Ampeg SVT-810E Cab Darkglass Electronics B7K Ultra Pedal (x2) Darkglass Electronics Hyper Luminal Compressor TC Electronic Polytune2 Line 6 L6G30 Relay Wireless In Tune .73 mm Tri Tip Picks DR Strings Hi-Beam 50-130 Custom 5-String Set CM: What’s the most recent piece you’ve added to that rig and how did it earn the spot? BS: The most recent piece is the Darkglass Microtubes 900. I was always a diehard Ampeg guy, but I started playing with the band Imonolith and [guitarist] Brian “Beav” Waddell had a bunch of Darkglass gear. I tried it all out and loved it! CM: You’re best-known for your work in metal and more aggressive styles. Do you keep up with or regularly perform in other styles to round out your playing? BS: I’m pretty much a metal guy. I enjoy a lot of other styles of music, but when I get together with other musician friends, it always ends up on the heavier side of things. I do have an upright bass in my living room that I jam out on occa- sionally, which I really enjoy, but I haven’t incorporated it into any of my projects yet. CANADIAN MUSICIAN 55
