By Ken Kelley What: Hard Rock Where: Summerside, PE Visit: www.aronscottearthquake.com For the past 12 years, Calgary’s Amy Hef has divided her time between her native Alberta and the bright lights of Los Angeles. She began her musical journey as a drummer before moving onto guitar and finding her voice as a songwriter, earning numerous accolades along the way, including Female Artist of the Year at Calgary’s YYCMA Music Awards in 2017. Her single “Drunk on Conversation,” which dropped later that year, has surpassed 150,000 streams on Spotify while her latest offerings, 2018’s “Somehow Someway” and “Again,” showcase some tightly-crafted electro-pop that, given the right ears, could easily make Hef a household name through- out Canada, the U.S., and beyond. COLLIN CLOWES What: Indie Folk Where: Lappe, ON Visit: www.collinclowesmusic.com 78 CANADIAN MUSICIAN If you listen to virtually any of the songs fea- tured on Collin Clowes’ latest record, Blackbird, you’re likely to notice a certain vulnerability lurking within the material. This is no coinci- dence. As a teen, Clowes suffered liver failure, which eventually landed him in the confines of a Toronto hospital room for the better part of three months. Although he had dabbled in songwriting prior to his illness, the art took on a whole new significance after his release from the hospital. The songs featured on Blackbird illustrate and explore the experiences and struggles he’s lived through, revealing a fragile but undeniably special spark similar to that found in the work of the late Elliott Smith. ARON SCOTT EARTHQUAKE Originally conceived in 2014 as a studio project, Atlantic Canada’s Aron Scott Earthquake has become one of the region’s hard rock torchbearers. Following the release of its self-titled album, the band earned airplay throughout Canada, the U.S., and select overseas markets. After sharing the stage with the likes of April Wine and Finger Eleven in 2017, the band headed back into the studio to track its sophomore effort, Rager, which dropped in 2018. The album and its 11 songs owe a significant debt – both in spirit and in sound – to the likes of Mötley Crüe and Guns N’ Roses. Aron Scott Earthquake’s “here for a good time” ethos might not be every- one’s cup of tea, but for many, the band will serve as a much-needed and high-impact escape from the mundane.
