ASSOCIATION UPDATE

Canadian Independent Music Association ( CIMA ) CIMA is continuing to offer artists / bands the opportunity to be featured during its virtual professional development sessions throughout 2021 . Applications are being accepted on an ongoing basis through the year . These sessions will include panels , information sessions , lunch and learns , etc ., in front of both national and international audiences . The performances will be aired during the live portion of the events .
As well , CIMA says it will promote the selected artist / bands and their company / business representatives on its website and socials prior to the events . Artists / bands selected for these opportunities will be contacted directly by CIMA and consulted on which session their performance will be featured in . Artists will receive a performance fee for the use of their live recording in CIMA ’ s session .
As these sessions will take place throughout 2021 , CIMA is asking artists to complete the application form in order to be considered throughout the year .

FACTOR FACTOR is now accepting applications for funding through the new Support to Live Music Events program . In the Fall Economic Statement , the Minister of Finance announced additional funding to support the planning and presentation of events and shows in response to COVID-19 . From this , $ 15 million is allocated to the Department of Canadian Heritage ( PCH ) via the Canada Music Fund ( CMF ). FACTOR and Musicaction will administer these funds through a new program , Support to Live Music Events . The purpose of the program is to stimulate the employment of Canadian artists and cultural workers , including technicians and other service providers and supporting workers , by providing financial support for live music events featuring Canadian artists that can be presented before an in-person audience and / or through digital dissemination .
The funding will mitigate the significant
12 CANADIAN MUSICIAN financial risks associated with presenting live music events in the current uncertain climate . Events supported through the Canada Music Fund ( CMF ) are expected to generate earning opportunities for artists and cultural workers in the live music sector . Priority will be given to equity-seeking populations and Indigenous-led organizations as well as applicants that do not traditionally receive CMF funding but were eligible for the 2020 Emergency Support Fund . All applicants must be Canadian / Canadian-owned and must support the career development of Canadian artists and / or offer musical programming by Canadian artists . Those eligible to apply include artist-entrepreneurs , artist managers , booking agents , concert promoters , music venues , and music festivals .
Applicants may apply only once during the fiscal year ( 2021-22 ) until March 1 , 2022 . The maximum request is $ 100,000 per eligible applicant for one or multiple projects .

Western Canadian Music Alliance The Western Canadian Music Alliance ( WCMA ) will host the next BreakOut West festival and conference – which was previously scheduled for this fall – from Feb . 2-6 , 2022 , in Winnipeg .
As well , in late May , the nominees were revealed for the 2021 Western Canadian Music Awards . The winners will be announced this October . Up for BreakOut Artist of the Year are Ariel Posen , Olivia Penalva , Sam Lynch , Sargeant X Comrade , and Tate McRae . Up for Recording of the Year are

ADVANCE , Canada ’ s Black Music Business Collective On June 19 th , ADVANCE , Canada ’ s Black Music Business Collective , hosted Amped , a one-day virtual summit geared towards students , career professionals , veteran executives , and artists in Canadian music . Featuring live discussions , panels , and performances , the topics covered included “ Understanding the Ontario Music Investment Fund ,” “ A Path to Professional Life in the Music Industry ,” “ How to Build and Scale Your Business ,” “ A Look at NFTs , Blockchain , and New Trends ,” and more . Tunde Ogunddipe and Kardinal Offishall presented the keynote on “ African Music to the World .”
