FAI Conference Showcase Submissions Open QUIQUE ESCAMILLA AT FAI Artist showcase applications have opened for the 2018 Folk Alli- ance International Conference, which will be held from Feb. 14-18 in Kansas City, MO. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 13, 2017. Early-bird conference registration is also now open until Aug. 30, 2017. The five-day FAI Conference regularly draws 2,500 registrants from over 15 countries to the world’s largest gathering of the folk and roots music industry. FAI membership is not required to submit an application. All selected artists and accompanying musicians are required to be paid registrants of the conference. Ontario’s IMC Rock Returns to Camp Manitou in August The IMC Rock camp is back for the summer 2017 at Camp Manitou in Milton, ON, taking place from Aug. 20-25. IMC Rock is part of the Interprovincial Music Camp program and sees young musicians performing with their band every evening after rehearsals with professional musicians preparing for each concert. There are daily technique classes on their chosen instrument and a daily performance by the faculty with lots of performance tips and stories about the rock world. Campers may also take advantage of the sports and recreation facilities, which include a complete waterfront of sailing, swimming, water-skiing, canoeing, and more. Last year’s teaching faculty included Bon Jovi guitarist Phil X, Lady Gaga guitarist Ricky Tillo, Big Wreck drummer Chuck Keeping, and Buffy Sainte-Marie drummer Michel Bruyere. Bernard Fowler, who has been the lead backup singer for The Rolling Stones for the past 25 years, teaches vocals to all the participants. For more information, go to www.campimc.ca. BreakOut West Launches New Website & App BreakOut West has launched its new website for the event’s 15th year, as well as a mobile app for BreakOut 2017, taking place in Edmonton from Sept. 13-17.The new website is now live at www.breakoutwest.ca. The new website features a more streamlined look, more readily available information, and easier navigation, with a focus on market- ing the artists and industry BreakOut West serves year-round. Users can also register for the conference, learn more about BreakOut West’s current initiatives and history, and check this year’s event schedule. As well, the website facilitates the promotion of what’s happening now in the western Canadian music scene, with content created by and for the artists and industry. The new BreakOut West mobile app distills the website content directly into mobile devices. The app also updates and delivers rele- vant content to users based on their favourite artists and geo-loca- tion within the event and maps out showcase venues in Edmonton. The conference is the largest event dedicat- ed to musicians of any genre who share a common professional approach. Last year’s meeting in Chicago attracted artists from 44 states and 15 countries. The DIY Musician Conference provides artists information on everything from press photo and live show makeovers to legal clinics for musicians. Experts will present deep dives into how to manage touring, publishing, and promotion. Other topics include how to use Spotify and Facebook Live to maximize income, how to grow audiences via social media and platforms like SoundCloud, and how to make the most of performance opportunities on the house concert circuit.
