NXNE 2016 Tests New Format

North by Northeast ( NXNE ) celebrated its 22 nd year from June 13-19 , 2016 with some major changes and new festival initiatives .
The inaugural year of the NXNE Port Lands site saw nearly 8,000 attendees over two days at this new festival space with performances by Schoolboy Q , Ghostface Killah , Daniel Caesar , Tasha the Amazon , Father John Misty , Mother Mother , and Dan Mangan .
During the seven-day festival , 200 artists performed at over a dozen venues across downtown Toronto for NXNE Club Land , including performances by Kamasi Washington , MSTRKRFT , Screaming Females , King Khan and The Shrines , The Joy Formidable , and TUNS .
NXNE Future Land focused on the video game industry for the first time , with sessions from industry leaders discussing how music plays a key role in gaming . NXNE Game Land at Yonge-Dundas Square saw 25,000 visitors over three days with musical performances by Fast Romantics , Zeus , and Jane ’ s Party .

Bill C-299 to Extend Copyright Protection for Authors , Composers & Publishers
Peter Van Loan , the Conservative MP for York-Simcoe , ON , has introduced Private Member ’ s Bill C-299 in parliament , which extends copyright protection for Canadian authors of every original literary , dramatic , musical , and artistic work from life plus 50 years to life plus 70 years . SOCAN CEO Eric Baptiste responded by saying the organization is “ beyond pleased ” to see the bill introduced .
Van Loan adds , “ The legislation would bring Canada in line with the international standard adopted by countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom . These changes would continue to help our creative economic sector , which is an increasingly important part of our economy , in driving further economic growth and a better quality of life in Canada .”
Last year , the government extended the term of copyright for sound recordings from 50 to 70 years .
… Music Nova Scotia has launched a new suite of music sector investment streams under the Music Nova Scotia Investment Program . The new investment program is designed to encourage the creation , development , and growth of small Nova Scotian music businesses around artists and their intellectual property . The program is also designed to align with FACTOR programs and the new provincial Creative Industries Fund .
