ARTIFICIAL

INTELLIGENCE :

Its Opportunities & Threats in Creative Industries

By Charlie Wall-Andrews , Lorena Escandon , Norah Lorway & Salman Rana

Every time a new technology is introduced into society , there is concern that it will eventually replace human labour . However , technology has proven time and again to provide its users with increased capabilities , productivity , and better working conditions . There are already examples of illustrators using artificial intelligence ( AI ) to improve their work , as well as musicians and composers using technology as collaborators to find creative prompts .

In non-creative industries , technological advancement typically leads to industrial optimization ( faster , smaller , cheaper ), with a tendency to adopt an optimal solution across the board ( e . g . continuity of design among mobile phones ). In the creative industries , on the other hand , there are no problems to solve , only the need to create , which in turn contributes to the production of culture . We create because we have emotions and desires . As a result , the absence of those embodied experiences of love , loss , happiness , and fear means that an algorithm cannot express itself uniquely . Humanity and the human experience are expressed through creativity and the production of cultural goods . One of the creative constraints proposed by technology and AI researchers is that art is made with human emotions .
The creative industries generate more than $ 2 trillion per year , and 92 % of large companies have already seen returns on their data and AI investments . AI and related technologies have caused unprecedented disruptions and exciting developments in value chains and operations across all fields over the last 10 years . There are opposing views on the role of this emerging technology in the cultural and creative sectors . While some see AI as an opportunity to create more immersive and transformative cultural content , others see it as a threat that could replace their jobs , resulting in reduced hours and permanent unemployment .
