Asking a player what their influences are is a stock question ; one that ’ s usually asked by necessity , answered briefly ,
and given a line or two of real estate in an article , at most .
For Canadian Musician ’ s 2021 drum / percussion feature , we ’ re asking that question but digging deeper – asking panelists not only who their musical influences are , but how they ’ ve evolved over time and what else influences their work and overall growth .
Typically , going into that level of depth is something interviewers reserve for lead players and vocalists rather than , generally speaking , drummers and percussionists . Given that they ’ re the folks who function as the engine of any ensemble , though , it ’ s well worth considering just what ’ s under the hood ...
