Nominees Revealed for 2021 Canadian Folk Music Awards

Beverly Glenn-Copeland , Main Source & Buffy Sainte-Marie Albums Receive Polaris Heritage Prize Designation
The Polaris Music Prize named classic albums from Beverly Glenn-Copeland , Main Source , and Buffy Sainte-Marie as the recipients of the 2020 Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize designation .
Beverly Glenn-Copeland ’ s Keyboard Fantasies , an influential new age / electronic album from 1986 was chosen in the Heritage Prize public voting category . Additionally , Buffy Sainte-Marie ’ s 1964 debut album , It ’ s My Way !, and Main Source ’ s ground-breaking 1991 hip-hop album , Breaking Atoms , both received Heritage designation by the 10-member Polaris Heritage Prize jury owing to a tie vote .
Like the Polaris Music Prize , winners and nominees for the Heritage Prize are Canadian albums of artistic distinction , without regard to musical genre or commercial popularity . This is the Polaris version of a hall of fame where it tries to determine who would have been nominated or won the prize before it began in 2006 .

The Canadian Folk Music Awards has announced the nominees for its 16 th edition . This year , the awards will again take place online via Facebook Live and will present all 19 awards , plus the Unsung Hero Award , over the weekend of April 9-10 , 2021 . The awards were originally scheduled for the same

For 2021 , the CFMAs are introducing a new award for Single of the Year that recognizes an artist or group and their producer ( s ) for a single release recording , or a track from an album that was released as a single , open to all folk genres , songs , and instrumentals . Another award has been added , World Music Album of The Year , which replaces the former awards for World Solo Artist and World Group of the Year .
Pharis and Jason Romero ’ s album Bet on Love leads the CFMAs with six nominations . As well , William Prince ’ s Reliever is honoured with five nominations , and The East Pointers ’ Yours to Break has four nominations . Riit , Catherine MacLellan , and Basia Bulat are honoured with three nominations each .

Art Bergmann , Robert Godin , Tom Jackson & Alain Chartrand Among Order of Canada Appointments
Punk legend Art Bergmann , guitar maker Robert Godin , actor and singer Tom Jackson , and film director Alain Chartrand were among the latest appointments to the Order of Canada announced by Governor General Julie Payette .
The governor general named Bergmann a Member of the Order of Canada for his “ indelible contributions to the Canadian punk music scene , and for his thought-provoking discourse on social , gender , and racial inequalities .” When talking to the CBC , the irony of an anti-establishment punk singer receiving this honour was not lost on Bergmann : “ I have been toiling in the underground for years and awards like this are kind of anathema ,” he commented .
Godin Guitars Founder Robert Godin received the honour “ for his research and development activities in guitar manufacturing .” Godin began his career as a guitar repairer in Montreal
ART BERGMANN in 1960s , going on to found Godin Guitars in 1972 with the opening of his first manufacturing facility . Today , Godin Guitars is the largest guitar maker in Canada , with four factories – three in Quebec and one in New Hampshire – emphasizing the use of local , sustainable woods in its processes .
Jackson , who was previously made an Officer of the Order of Canada , was promoted to its highest level and now has the title of Companion of the Order of Canada . He ’ s an iconic Indigenous actor , with leading roles in North of 60 and Shining Time Station among others . He ’ s also a prolific singer with 10 albums to date .
Chartrand was recognized for “ for his leadership at the helm of a pan-Canadian music initiative and for promoting Francophone music at home and abroad .”
