Yanic Simard's MODERN bathroom the project This condo bathroom was in good working order, but aesthetically unexciting. At the beginning of the design process, we discovered that none of the plumbing fixtures could be moved due to condo restrictions, but that didn’t stop us from giving the space a totally new visual appeal. After months of planning and hard work, the space was completely transformed - despite having the same layout. my challenge The original design of this bathroom was a typical white winter wonderland - the homeowner wanted a more masculine style with more personality. my solution Mixing materials was key to giving this space life, while maintaining a spa-like serenity. Relating tones of rich taupes and warm beiges are found in the large limestone wall tiles, the slim rectilinear floor mosaic, and the fish-scale tile feature wall we created in the shower, so the surfaces stay harmonious while providing visual variety. The original fixtures, still in great condition, were donated to Habitat for Humanity to make way for slick modern options, such as the California style walk-in shower replacing the tub. The floor-to-ceiling glass panel framing the shower opens the sight lines, with an oversized vanity mirror doubling the effect again, for a light and airy look that still speaks to a masculine style. “Mixing materials was key to giving this space life while maintaining a spa-like serenity.” Text Yanic Simard Photography Brandon Barré FACT SHEET the designer Yanic Simard firm Toronto Interior Design Group background TIDG strives to create new and innovative spaces for a wide range of homeowners.
