What could have been a formal and
conventional dining room was transformed
by adding a bit of humour, with the mix
match coloured chairs and one of a kind art
pieces from Design Republic. I used a
live-wood table as a pretentious way of tying
in the old, balancing it with an over-dramatic
modern, black mirror for the new.
I tried to add the TEB pillows throughout the
house that use traditional fabric with rock and roll
figures on the front for that touch of absurdity and
unexpectedness to formal looking furniture pieces.
I added doses of pattern, texture and colour
judiciously through rugs, fabric and artwork to bring
energy and interest to each room within the large
home.
By mixing up high products with low, like ZAU with
Bouclair Home, Chair Table Lamp with Budget Blinds,
we didn’t end up breaking the bank; but, to look at
the project you would never know we didn’t. The trick
to high low design, when it comes to the larger and
high traffic pieces, go high, and when it comes to the
small or low traffic pieces, go low. Your statement
pieces within the room should always be high; this
gives the illusion that everything is expensive.
The truly enjoyable part of this project was that this
eclectic house demanded a very unique style to show
its true potential. This meant I got to break some
design rules, and who doesn’t like to break rules every
now and then!
