psychoactive drugs such as cannabis, rigorous criteria for its approval as a safe and effective medicine need to be fulfilled, along with a meticulous cost-benefit analysis to weigh its therapeutic potential alongside it detrimental effects to individuals and to society.

So let’s accept that CBD is indeed a powerful and effective anti-inflammatory and it is the degree of effectiveness that requires more study and on a medical condition by medical condition basis. We also know that we have an endocannabinoid system that appears to, among other things, modulate inflammation (click here). You may recall I put fort the supposition earlier – what if there was something common to many medical conditions?

A modern theory of disease suggests a correlation between inflammation (chronic inflammation specifically) and disease. This 2006 article titled A Unifying Theory of Disease published by the Harvard Medical School succinctly explains this theory (click here). The article suggests:

Although there may never be such a single path, mounting evidence suggests a common underlying cause of major degenerative diseases. The four horsemen of the medical apocalypse — coronary artery disease, diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer's — may be riding the same steed: inflammation.

You will note that these “four horsemen of the medical apocalypse” are included in the list of medical conditions that cannabis has shown degrees of success in treating. You will also note that these are the same four conditions discussed earlier as becoming epidemic. This article (click here) explores more diseases and conditions where chronic inflammation plays a role and the article makes clear that this list is not a complete list.
