MSC Engages NSERC Research Program Access with Academic Collaborations at the University of Guelph and the University of Alberta

Dr. Tariq Akhtar, Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, University of Guelph is an academic researcher whose partnership with MSC encompasses the identification of novel terpenes and other medicinal products of high value, mediated by programmed cannabis genome expression systems. Professor Akhtar’s laboratory along with the sponsored mass spectrometry facility scientists within the department hold the potential unlocking of new terpene classes and producing these compounds for lab reference materials. Our industry sponsored scientific approaches grants MSC permission to participate in the NSERC Engage and Collaborative Research programs.

Characterization of terpenoids, a class of metabolites expressed in cannabis that have implications as natural health products, bring desirable formulations and product prospects to powerful brands. The research proposed uncovers the gene biosynthetic pathways responsible for the expression of particular novel sesquiterpenes in C. sativa and aims to deliver the compounds by genetic expression into systems that offer yields on demand in oil-based formulations.
