that are exhibited by various Cannabis strains, more research is required. There is also the issue that several of the terpenes present in Cannabis have yet to be identified (see my argument below on this point).

Q) Can Molecular Science’s labs identify the terpene compositions?

A) Yes, we will be able to offer terpene profiling as part of our service offerings likely in early 2019.

Q) Is there anything else on Terpenes that readers should know

A) The QA/QC procedures that are currently employed to identify the suit of terpenes that accumulate in the plant are flawed for the following reason: Identification of specific terpenes in plant extracts is limited by the availability of authentic terpene standards for comparison and verification – most QC/QA operations rely on commercially available terpenes that are abundant in the plant and cheaply available to purchase and therefore ignore the vast majority of terpenes that are actually present in the plant because there is no available basis for comparison. Hence, and by way of example, branding particular cultivars as ‘high myrcene strains’ may be true, but the current analytics disregard the potential that other and more ‘exotic’ terpenes that are present in the plant, and escape the current detection protocols, may also contribute to the so-called ‘entourage effect’ that consumers are so actively seeking. Furthermore, the concentration of a particular terpene that is perceivable by the human sense of smell, taste, or reaction, known as the bioactivity threshold, is unrelated to their actual abundance in the plant. Therefore the low abundant and ‘exotic’ terpenes that are present in C. sativa must be considered in current production schemes.
