The old challenges presented to edibles consumers have long since been overcome by my company, Lexaria Bioscience Corp. Three years ago, in August of 2015 we performed some of the industry’s first in-vitro tests following pharma standards and proved our DehydraTECH™ formulation innovation could boost ingestible intestinal absorption levels of cannabinoids by 325% - 499%. That number is crucial because if you can improve absorption of a cannabis edible by roughly 550%, you have actually achieved the average absorption level of smoking.
Another old hurdle for edibles is the painfully long delay experienced between the time of ingestion and time of effect; in the old days this was often 60 – 120 minutes. This has changed radically with the onset of technologies like our DehdyraTECH™. Many companies are using complex ingredient additives that, while not exactly melodic to pronounce, are effective at reducing the delays in effectiveness to 30 minutes and even less. It’s even easier to have faster acting beverages because absorption begins in the buccal tissue of the mouth and throat, sometimes in 10 minutes or less. But, use of the ingredient compositions by other companies is not only a mouthful to pronounce, but is also a mouthful literally to ingest resulting in food and beverage products often with a litany of multi-syllable chemical additives necessary to enhance product performance. This begs the question, are consumers really going to want their cannabis food and beverage labels to look like their pharma drug labels? Given a viable alternative, we think not.
Lexaria came at this problem from another angle, and our DehdyraTECH™ molecular conjugation technology is designed to rapidly cross the intestinal wall and enter the lymphatic circulatory system for rapid delivery to the bloodstream at multiple points. In contrast, nearly everything you swallow is destined to enter the liver once it gets across the intestinal wall, and while the liver does a great job of metabolizing (processing) molecules, it takes time to do so and this is what is responsible for the customary 60 – 120 minute delays with conventional cannabis edibles. When Lexaria’s DehyrdaTECHTM technology bypasses the liver, it also bypasses these delays.
