CONCLUSION

The idea of recruiting the homeostatic functions of the ECS as a therapeutic option for EOL symptom management has been presented here. The principle of homeostasis, first described by French physician Claude Bernard (1813-1878), underpins many common medical treatments, such as coagulation management and IV fluid therapy. As a potential complement to current medicines, the homeostatic approach to dying supports the body’s feedback mechanisms and trusts that the body “knows” how to die.

According to Maccarrone & Finazzi-Agro (2003), the ECS plays a role in apoptosis. In normal physiology, apoptosis initiates cell-death when it serves an organism’s survival. In contrast to necrosis, in which a cell bursts as a result of trauma, apoptosis merely inactivates appropriate cells. The ECS may play a role in promoting the CNS stability and quiet underpinning the unperturbed dying process exhibited on the “usual road.” Options are needed to increase the likelihood that more individuals will experience the “usual road” of dying. The potential targeting of the ECS for its neuroprotective effects is worthy of consideration and investigation to address the symptom management challenge of the “difficult road.”
