Legislation in April at the time of writing was restricted. While edibles were legal to consume, including marijuana-infused cookies, brownies, muffins, oils, teas, coffees and juices, it paradoxically did not include the sale of edibles in product form.

On October 3, 2017, the Liberal government amended Bill C-45, with the Standing Committee on Health voting to include edibles containing cannabis and cannabis concentrates. However, those curious or those that choose to consume edibles as their preferred source of cannabis will have to wait until July 2019.

Dr. Shane Morris, Vice President of Quality Assurance and Scientific Affairs, at Quebec-based Hydropothecary Corporation (TSXV: THCX), tweeted a letter written to the Committee. In it, the company states that:

“There are considerable risks in leaving the edible cannabis sector without regulations. Therefore, it is recommended that the Government amend Bill C-45 to allow for:

1. the ability to legally sell cannabis edibles (other than cannabis oil and fresh cannabis) to help combat a key black-market sector;

2. cannabis edible products to contain caffeine to a maximum level of 0.5mg/g (+/- 5%) to allow chocolate use; and

3. a regulatory framework that could be immediately established similar to those already in place in the State of Colorado or Washington, that could effectively mitigate the food safety and mis-dosing risks that experienced federally regulated licenced producers could operate within.”

Canada lost an icon recently. Personally, I lost a big part of my younger years. Well maybe not lost because in a sense, the memories remain. Being a big sports and music fan, these memories are what I’d consider my glory days, or the good old days for me. LOL (yes I am actually laughing out loud as I write that). Going to these big outdoor rock festivals watching one of my favourite bands, The Tragically Hip, being in front of the TV hearing Joe Bowen’s call of Toronto Maple Leaf’s Nikolai Borschevsky game 7 series winning monumental upset of the Detroit Red Wings in the opening round of the 1993 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, losing my shoe in a sea of people on Yonge Street after Joe Carter’s 1993 game winning world series winning home run.

Apparently, the Committee heeded these wise recommendations!
