LXX continued... themselves with the cannabis industry – Constellation was the first but certainly will not be the last. And if the American government one day removes its current restrictive classification on cannabis, then you’ll see Fortune 500 companies dive into the sector in a matter of months.
Absorption of active ingredients into the body is complicated but smoking is a fast and simple method towards absorption: molecules are liberated into very small particles that are absorbed through the lungs directly into the bloodstream, bypassing first-pass liver metabolism. People smoking cigarettes or joints experience the active molecules very, very quickly but do so at significant risk to their long term health and public disapproval.
On the other hand, virtually everything you eat enters the portal vein for liver metabolism after crossing the intestinal wall. This alters (metabolizes) many active ingredient such as THC and also delays release into the bloodstream: this is why cannabis edibles generally take a long time to produce an effect. Lexaria’s technology alters the pathway for edibles, bypassing the portal vein and, we believe, instead enters the lymphatic circulatory system. Like smoking, the active THC is NOT altered nor processed by the liver. This is what gives our technology our speed advantage: the liver requires time to perform its work. DehydraTECHTM technology allows us to choose different fatty acids to work with – some of them purposely directed to the liver and/or some of them purposely bypassing the liver. So with custom formulations we can help our partners design edibles to carry THC and CBD that mostly bypasses the liver for faster action or acceleration of effect. Or, especially for pain relief, we can design products with a mixture of fatty acids utilizing our tech designed to both act fast and then have a subset of active ingredient hit the liver and release more slowly into the system, a purposefully designed time release product.
You know... the day will come when consumers are going to DEMAND these types of benefits in their edible products.. the old fashioned brownies are not going to cut it any longer.
