Methadone Addiction Treatment: The Battle
against a Drug

Just like any other addictions, there are several methods to treat methadone
addiction. One of the common ways to treat this addiction is through medicines.
Methadone itself is a medicine, but to withdraw its effects, another medication is
also required. Some addictions can be cured with over-the-counter medicines, but
because of strong effects of methadone, other narcotic drugs are required such as
Buprenorphine and L-alpha-acetylmethadol.
Another most common way to treat methadone is the detoxification process.
Medical detox is a treatment centre where the patient is kept under the
observation – just like rehabilitation centre. An individual who is trying to stop or
reduce the use of the drug is usually recommended for medical detox. The
withdrawal symptoms can be moderate to severe depending on how much his or
her body can resist the urge of the drug. During this process, medicines and
counselling sessions are also given to the patients. Doctors strongly suggest the
family members to visit and support the patient as it helps him or her to build self-
confidence and courage to fight the battle against the addiction.
