Alaska Railroad
Denali Star | Alaska Railroad
The Alaska Railroad provides year-round rail transportation throughout
Southcentral and Interior Alaska, traversing almost 500 miles of remote and wild
landscapes and safely bringing more than 500,000 passengers to popular Alaska
destinations each year.
Alaska Railroad Routes & Services
Denali Star - Fairbanks to Anchorage
The Alaska Railroad’s flagship Denali Star Train links Anchorage and Fairbanks
with stops in Wasilla, Talkeetna and Denali National Park. The 572-kilometre
route features spectacular scenery including Hurricane Gulch, where you will
travel across the tallest bridge on the Alaska Railroad. As the tracks traverse into
the Interior, on a clear day, you will witness incredible views of Denali, North
America’s tallest peak. Travelling from Anchorage to Denali National Park is
the most popular Alaska Railroad route, and you can choose from two classes
of passenger service: Adventure Class or GoldStar Service. GoldStar Service
features bi-level, glass-domed rail cars and includes meals in the full-service
dining room. Available from mid-May to mid-September
Glacier Discovery - Anchorage to Whittier/Grandview
The Glacier Discovery Train departs from Anchorage and travels south along the
shore of Turnagain Arm. After stopping at the resort town of Girdwood, the train
leaves the main track for the journey through a mountain tunnel to the port of
Whittier – the gateway to Prince William Sound – where many passengers board
day cruises to view glaciers and marine wildlife. The train then continues south to
the Placer Valley, an area only accessible by train. This area is part of the Chugach
National Forest, the second largest in the United States. Disembark at Spencer
Glacier and join a guided rafting or kayaking trip among the icebergs on Spencer
Lake, or a hike with a Forest Service Ranger. Or, stay on board the train and
enjoy views of the spectacular glaciers along the way to the train’s turnaround
point,Grandview. Daily round-trip service from late May to mid-September.
Coastal Classic - Anchorage to Seward
The Coastal Classic Train is a local favourite, providing daily round-trip service
between Anchorage and Seward. A string of massive glaciers, visible only from
the train, enhances the journey as you travel south to Seward on the shores
of Resurrection Bay. This area is the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park
where you can enjoy whale watching, tidewater glacier viewing, or even enjoy
a summer dog sled ride. Two levels of passenger service are available on the
Coastal Classic: Adventure Class and GoldStar Service. GoldStar Service features
bi-level rail cars with glass-dome ceilings and an exclusive outdoor viewing
platform – an excellent vantage point to see the most beautiful stretch of the
Alaska Railroad – and includes full-service dining with a view. Depart from either
Seward or Anchorage; runs mid-May to mid-September.
