Sights within Old Québec include the grandiose Chateau Frontenac , which has stood overlooking the St Lawrence River and Dufferin Terrace for over 100 years . There ’ s also legendary Place Royale , home to the first permanent French settlement and Notre-Dame-des-Victoires , the oldest stone church in North America . The French influence is evident in the Quartier Petit-Champlain , a scenic district with narrow streets housing artisan boutiques and restaurants . A stroll along rue Saint-Jean is another must , with a string of shops , eateries , churches and historic buildings all creating a unique and eclectic ambience .
In the heart of Old Quebec overlooking the St Lawrence River , La Citadelle is the largest military fortification in North America . It was started by the French in 1750 , but much of what can be seen today was constructed by the British between 1820-1850 . Daily military spectacles are staged during the summer months . Also within Old Quebec is Parliament Hill , an architectural treasure where Quebec ’ s National Assembly convenes . Here also find the Plains of Abraham , an oasis of greenery in the heart of the city ; and la Grande-Allee where a bevy of restaurants , patios and entertainment venues attract locals and visitors alike .
If time allows , museums include the Musee de la Civilisation and Musee National des Beaux-arts due Quebec or , at the Observatoire de la Capitale there are bird ’ s eye views of the St Lawrence River and beyond . Ile d ’ Orleans , just 15 minutes from downtown , is well worth a visit and situated just across from the breathtaking Montmerency Falls . Consider also the Beaupré Coast for its picturesque landscapes or seek out family fun at the Aquarium du Quebec and waterparks of Valcartier Vacation Village .

Best time to go : June through to September is the most popular time to visit when temperatures are warm , so perfect for exploring the many historic sights . If you don ’ t mind the cold , winter is quieter , and while snow often blankets the city between December and April , there ’ s still plenty to enjoy .
