An ocean-fringed city of culture , cuisine and outdoor adventures
From colourful downtown neighbourhoods , to culturally diverse suburbs and mountainside districts , there ’ s plenty to explore in Vancouver !
Gastown is the city ’ s cobbled old-town district and has oodles of charm as Victorian buildings house boutiques , galleries and some of the city ’ s best culinary fare . Don ’ t miss the Steam Clock , which puffs steam-powered chimes every 15 minutes , or Vancouver Lookout for bird ’ s eye views .
Chinatown is one of North America ’ s largest and most historic Chinese enclaves . It buzzes with lively bars , cross-cultural eateries , traditional grocers and import shops . Here also is the Dr Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden , modelled after a traditional garden from the Ming Dynasty .
Commercial Drive is one of the city ’ s best and most colourful shopping , dining and nightlife hubs ; Granville Street is the main entertainment district ; while chic Yaletown is filled with sidewalk cafés , cool restaurants , unique shopping and leafy parks . Bordering Yaletown is Robson Street , the city ’ s best known shopping precinct and a must-meander area for visitors .
West End is the gateway to lush Stanley Park . Featuring huge trees , everblooming gardens , lovely beaches and the intricately carved Brockton Point Totem Poles all encircled by a six mile paved seawall , it ’ s best explored on foot or bike . English Bay has one of the city ’ s loveliest beaches as well as great shopping and high-end dining , and charming Coal Harbour is another top spot for neighbourhood cafés and restaurants .
A favourite with locals and visitors alike , Granville Island is a thriving centre of activity with a relaxed atmosphere and just a ferry ride across False Creek . The biggest attraction is the indoor public market , with seemingly endless rows of stalls of fresh produce and gourmet food .
When you tire of city crowds , North Shore is a perfect escape and just 15 minutes from the city ’ s downtown core . Wobbly thrills await you on the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park , while at the vast alpine playground of Grouse Mountain , take the Skyride up the mountain for stunning views .
Getting there : Non-stop flights from the UK to Vancouver take about 9 hours .
Best time to go : Vancouver enjoys mild winters ( January-March ) so outdoor enthusiasts need not hibernate , although mountain slopes are about 20 minutes away . Spring is sunnier while summer ( July-September ) sees pleasant warm temperatures . Things cool down in autumn but the changing colours of the leaves make it a spectacular time to visit .
