M ore than 100 Australian academics have made it onto a global list of the most highly cited researchers. The 2017 Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researchers list identifies authors who have consistently won approval from their peers, and reveals the academics who are top in their field based on the extent to which their papers have influenced others around the world. This year’s list features 127 Australian authors, including 20 from the University of Melbourne, 15 from the University of Queensland and eight from the University of Sydney. The most notable institutions on the list were Harvard and Stanford universities in the US with 109 and 40 entries respectively, followed by Germany’s Max Planck Society with 47, and the Chinese Academy of Science with 45. Clarivate Analytics’ senior citations analyst David Pendlebury said the rise in China’s output of publications and its increasing influence were visible in the report. “What we are now seeing is China’s increasing presence among most cited authors and papers, especially in the physical sciences,” he said. “This year, the number of Chinese scientists in the Highly Cited Researchers list is 237 – 34 per cent more than last year. “That makes the nation third in number of highly cited researchers behind the US and UK. China’s output of materials science papers is now more than twice that of the US, and it is capturing a greater and greater share of top cited papers in the field. In some fields, China has not only caught up, but it is now powering ahead.” There were 130,000 papers selected from 900 institutions in the report this year. The US was most prominent, with 1661 authors and a 13 per cent increase since last year. The UK came in second with almost 350 entries, while China’s third place with 237 authors and growth of 34 per cent was the highest increase in any nation.
