The incoming UA chair promises to champion ideas, growth and the need for Australian universities to keep engaging with the world for the sake of the country’ s economy.

Monash University vice-chancellor professor Margaret Gardner is to be the next chair of Universities Australia.
She is set to succeed current UA chair professor Barney Glover, who is also vicechancellor of Western Sydney University. Gardner will take the reins as chair on May 16.“ She’ ll bring deep insight and formidable intellect to this role,” Glover says of his successor.“ The organisation will be in great hands.” Gardner says she plans to use her time as chair to lead UA in communicating to the public and the government how a strong and well-funded university sector benefits Australia. She adds that she will also focus on maintaining and improving Australia’ s stellar performance in international education. The Australian Bureau of Statistics recently reported that international education generated $ 21.8 billion in income for Australia last year. Figures from the federal Department of Education show that 45 per cent of all international students are enrolled in universities.
